Umbrella adapters allow you to mount your hotshoe flash (plus an umbrella, if so desired) to light stands, clamps, etc. for off-camera lighting.  Very handy, and inexpensive, these things are your friends!  This model of LumoPro adapter has teeth on the insides of the swivel for better locking action, as well as the hotshoe adapter on the top to mount your hotshot flash.
